Department of BOTANY

Department of Biology came into existence in 1948. Botany was taught as one of the minor subject at degree level. In 1971 Botany was introduced as one of the major subject at degree level.
Prof. U.K. Kulkarni worked in the department of Biology and completed his Ph.D. in the college with specialization in Botany at Shivaji University, Kolhapur in 1965.
Department of Botany came into existence in 1971 and Late Prof (Miss.) M.B.Rananavare was head of the Department of Botany in 1965. Prof. N.R. Adoor, Prof. A.V. Kulkarni, Prof. Dr. V.R. Gujar, Prof. S.F. Patroti, Prof. A.L. Gadgil were working as lecturers in the department of Botany. Prof. N.R. Adoor became the head of Department in October 1977. Prof. V.R.Gujar was awarded Ph.D. in 1982 from Shivaji Uni. Kolhapur in Plant Physiology

In 1965 Green House was constructed in Botanical Garden to grow Shade Loving & Ornamental Plants. In 1980 'Nature Lover's Club' was established and Prof. N.R. Adoor and Prof. S.Y. Prabhu were the founder members. In 1991, Sericulture an optional subject was added with Botany and Zoology combination. In1999, Rare Medicinal Plants cultivated in Botanical Garden. In 2000 Campus trees and shrubs labelled with Botanical & Common names. In 2005, along with B.Sc III students did survey of flora and fauna of Vaccine Depot. Prof B.L.MajuKar became the head of the department in 2005,Prof B.R.Sholapurmath joined the college in 2005 ,Prof P.M.Bhat joined in 2007 and Prof Y.B.Dalvi joined in 2008.The department organized a workshop on "Pharmacognacy" in 2012.The national seminar was organized on the topic "Multiutility plants for Afforestation"in 2014
