INSTITUTIONAL DISTINCTIVENESS

India today has almost 60% of its population below the age of 35 which means there is a large number of youths in the country. This demographic advantage can be utilized for the development of the nation provided they are educated and empowered. Keeping this in mind our college has its own vision and mission statements:

Vision: “Be a centre for excellence in science education to build strong future generations for a vibrant and self-reliant nation”.

Mission: “To commit ourselves to achieve our vision through relentless pursuit of knowledge, ensuring creativity and critical thinking, fostering human values and patriotic fervour”.

Our college is a pure science college imparting education both in UG and PG programmes. We offer 7 UG and 2 PG programmes with the state of the art facilities in order to provide an excellent eco system for science education. This is reflected in the vision statement wherein we always strive to excel in science education to build a strong, vibrant and self-reliant nation in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020.

THRUST AREA: GREEN CAMPUS AS AN INITITIVE FOR FOSTERING HUMAN VALUES AMONG STUDENTS

The college has green and eco-friendly campus with beautiful landscape. Botanical Garden has rich diversity of flora and fauna. The floral diversity with 150 flowering plant species, 6 Gymnosperms species, 9 Pteridophytes species, 6 Bryophytes species, 2 Insectivorous, 20 Cactus species, 50 Medicinal plants, 8 Aquatic plant, Living fossil Ginkgo biloba. Our botanical garden has single rare gymnosperm tree called Zamia, from Africa. It is a male plant. Without a female there was no chance of propagation. For reproduction purpose we collected pollen grains from male cones and took them to Shivaji University, Kolhapur which has single female species of zamia. The pollen grains were dusted on female cone and viable seeds are formed. The seeds have now been successfully germinated into saplings.

The Fauna diversity with 78 insect species, 33 Butterfly species, 9 Amphibian species, 14 Reptile species, 46 Bird species and 17 Mammal’s species are studied and recorded.

The Botanical garden has Greenhouse to grow shade loving plants, Cactus Garden, Medicinal Plants, herbal medicinal garden, Ornamental Plants, Fruit Yielding plants, gymnosperm plants and rare Andaman and Nicobar palm are grown in our Botanical Garden as part of Biodiversity Conservation Programme.

QR Code for the trees of campusQR code is tagged to trees in the College campus to identify trees, their characters and uses. These codes can be scanned with Smartphone, which will display complete information of that individual tree including scientific, general and ecological information. Objective of the project was to design and implement a user-friendly tree identification online repository for GSS campus using open-source smart technology.

Environment Consciousness and Eco-friendly campusThe college has installed an Effluent Treatment Plant in the college botanical garden. The effluent generated from Chemistry Lab is treated. After the treatment processes is completed the treated water is tested for various physico-chemical parameters as per the Pollution Board water norms. The water after testing is used for gardening. The growth of the plant and its effect of any residual chemical is checked periodically by using micro technique. About 3000 liters of water treated from effluents is reused for plants in botanical garden.

Vermi-compost unitThe campus has many deciduous trees. The solid waste biomass like withered leaves of trees is collected and transferred to vermicompost pit for compost formation, situated in botanical garden of college campus. The compost formed in the vermicompost unit is used to grow plants in the campus.

Water Harvesting PitAs part of ground water recharge and water conservation programme the college has installed 4 water harvesting pits, where the roof water of the college buildings during rainy season gets collected and the water sinks in the soil strata.

Clean campus drive: With an intention to keep the campus clean and green, from 4pm to 5 pm, the college management members, staff and students on the last Saturday of every month collect the plastics from the college campus and keep the campus plastic free.

Solar Energy harvesting: In every building of college campus there are solar lights installed. There are many solar panels on the roof top of the Lab Building. Street lights are solar which has sensors which automatically switch them on and off.

In addition, the institution has several other distinctive features such as:

Geology department: Ours is the only college which offers courses in Geology as an optional subject under Rani chennamma University, Belagavi. The department has Geological museum: The Bharat Ratna Dr. A. P. J Abdul Kalam geology Museum that has rare collection of rocks, minerals, ores, fossils, models, charts and photographs of geological features. Overall, it has more than 2000 specimens collected from various parts of India and abroad. There are some specimens from Antarctica.

Hobby centre: Hobby centre is a unique feature that provides platform to our girl students to enjoy and cultivate different hobbies. Earn while you learn has been the motto of hobby centre. Regular stitching, knitting, crochet, pillow making, flower making, decorative lamps, skylights etc training for girl student to make them independent.

Foreign languages academy: In order to equip the students with the knowledge of some of the common foreign languages, the college started coaching for German language. It has plans to start coaching for French language also in the near future.

Sports academy The academy was launched on 29th August 2014, celebrated as national sports Day. The academy intends to create a culture of sports in schools and colleges. The academy gives training in athletics, fitness, cricket, hockey and basketball to students of different schools throughout the year.
