Govindram Seksaria Science College
The Chemistry Department prepares students for a diverse and changing world. We strive to contribute towards a chemically literate society through teaching and research. The students are exposed to a competitive world through field visit.
The Chemistry Department pledges itself to encourage in the broadest, most liberal manner, the advancement of science and particularly Chemistry in all its branches through its education, research and experimental illustration
Department of Chemistry came into existence since the inception of R.P.D. College in the year 1945 at Sawantwadi. Later, moved to Belgaum, so, as to fulfil the need of the larger mass of the society. The department started to offer Chemistry as the major subject for the students. Initially it started as a small department with fewr students opting Chemistry as their major subject for their graduation. In the beginning Prof.V.V.Kogekar, Prof. Ketkar and Prof. M.N.S. Murti were few faculty members who worked for the development of the department. However, because of increased demand for its quality education in the early 1960, R.P.D College was fragmented into R.P.D. Arts College and G.S. Science College in 1966 and since then the department of Chemistry is under the flagship of G.S.S. College. Prof. M.K. Bhandare was the first Head of the Department under the bifurcated G.S.S. College in 1966. Due to new educational policy in 1991 Chemistry subject was transformed from major/minor subject to an optional subject. In 2020 Choice Base Credit System (CCBS) and thereafter from 2021 onwards New Education Policy was implemented.
The Department of Chemistry is the largest among all the departments and offers Chemistry as an optional subject for 6 combinations. There are 9 faculty members working in the department. There are 5 non-teaching staff members working in the department. Presently the department is headed by Dr.S.M.Deshpande
Department also conducts Innovative curricular and extra-curricular activities such as Seminars, Workshops, Guest Lectures, study tours, Student Projects Certificate courses etc successfully. All these activities help to add a great value to our teaching and learning programme.

The Department of Chemistry has also made noteworthy achievements in research with a DST major project and four UGC minor projects completed. The details of the research are covered in the research centre section.
Dr. S.G. Adoor received a major grant of Rs. 24.3 lacs by Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi in 2010 to undertake the project titled ‘Designing of novel polymeric membranes for pervaporation separation of water/organic mixture’ and also to develop the laboratory. The Physical and Polymer Chemistry laboratory is developed under the same grant. One student worked as a Project Assistant for the project and two papers are published in high impact factor international journals. Other than this, the department has also completed four minor projects funded by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi.
Since the department is successfully running the Post-Graduate course in Organic Chemistry since 2009 it was eligible for the grant of research centre under Rani Channamma University (RCU), Belagavi. Accordingly, the department was recognized as the research centre in July 2021. Presently the department is having two laboratories under the research centre.
