Govindram Seksaria Science College
The Botany Department has well qualified faculty with PhD, NET, SET, GATE. Department has quality infrastructure to conduct UG and PG courses. There are eight well equipped laboratories and lecture Halls, presentation rooms, a Research laboratory with various instruments like Spectrophotometer ,Soxhlet apparatus, Laminar air flow Hood, Agarose gel electrophoresis kits, Autoclave Incubator etc.Botanical Museum,a Botanical garden with greenhouse and rich variety of plants, Vermi-compost units,Water Harvesting System ,Effluent Treatment Plant etc.,The Department has its own library with many books and National & International Journals. It has entered into MOU’S with Gogate Jogalekar college,Ratngiri Maharastra and Mhadei research center,Chorla Belgavi for academic and research activities .The department has done QR coding of more than 1000 tree plants in college campus as a step towards e-learning. As our college has well equipped lab and classroom facility RCU university Botany department is also running in our campus.
Important features of the project is the use of open source technology, user friendly search options, geolocation, android application, more than 100 tree species identified and more than 750 individual trees tagged so far. This will be the first time in Karnataka, where such open -source technology is used in public space, in college campus for awareness. This would be a pioneering step towards smart digital campus, and also save as a case study for other institutions in the future. The basic objective of the project was “To design and implement a user friendly tree identification online repository for GSS campus using open source smart technology”

Fungi are heterotrophic non-photosynthetic organisms. They play a key role in ecosystem by performing the decomposition process. They display a myriad of diversity in their structure morphology and organization.
A detailed survey was carried out in GSS college campus to document the diversity of fungi. The campus has rich fungal diversity and Around 90 species were document from the campus. Some species are displayed in the plate. Wood rotting polypore, jelly fungi, dead man’s fingers, claws, plurotus, parachute mushrooms are some of the most commonly occurring fungi in the campus. The survey is continued and more documentation is still in process.
Pteridophytes are one of the early land dwellers and most primitive group of vascular plants. They act as a connection between non vascular cryptogams and seed plants. Grow well in moist shady places.
Now a days their population is decreasing because increasing anthropogenic pressure, destruction of forest ecosystem and development of infrastructure facilities including road widening. Destruction of water bodies. The survey is conducted to document the ferns available in Belgaum district. Total of 52 fern species are documented some are displayed in the plate.
