Mission of Department:

  • The Geology Department will develop in each student, art of imagination, critical thinking, and enthusiasm and build necessary skills to be a good geoscientist and to be the lover of mother earth.
  • To facilitate integrated and interdisciplinary approach in their learning.
  • Develop a greater awareness of the Earth Science in the general public through outreach programs

Vision of Department:

“The Geology Department of the GSS College seeks to provide the basic and fundamental concepts in Geology through our educational, research and outreach programs in order to produce well-trained, young geoscientists capable of responding to societal needs. To establish the Department of Geology as the centre for research in this part of the country.Promoting the development of Geology.”

Objective of Department

  • The Geology department strives to develop in each student the concern towards sustainable use of natural resources such as- Rocks, Minerals, Water and Energy sources
  • To impart and inculcate in students the basic geological knowledge and prepare them to be a good geoscientist.
  • To imbibe in them the love towards mother earth and care for the environment.
  • To create awareness in them about the Earth’s environment, critical issues and need for sustainable development.
  • To develop abilities of logical thinking and imagination; importance of field data collection, data analyses, synthesizing and drawing fair conclusions.

Detailed Description about Department

  • The Geology Department started since 1966, by Prof. S. S. Navani, has produced number of Geologists who have built their career in Geology and have earned fame worldwide. Since then the department grew to 7 staff members. The department has seen Professors' Shri. S.S.Navani, Dr. D. I. Deendar, Dr. V. H. Uttangi, Prof. S. V. Pauskar, Prof. H.G.Patil, Prof. R.N.Kulkarni and Prof. A. K. Mense all are retired. Prof.A.K.Mense has also served as Principal. At present, Dr. P. T. Hanamgond (Head of the Department), Mr.Yogesh Kutre and Mr.Suraj Mense are putting their efforts in imparting Geological education to the students.
  • The department has completed four major and one minor research project sponsored by UGC, DST and MoES under the guidance of P. T.Hanamgond. The faculty of the department is having expertise in Sedimentology especially in coastal research, Geological mapping, Geophysical exploration and remote sensing.
  • The subject Geology is being taught as one of the three optional subjects with 3 combinations- Physics Maths Geology (PMG); Chemistry Geology Computer Science (CGCom); and Chemistry Botany Geology (CBG) in CBCS and 6 combinations – Geology-Physics, Geology-Mathematics, Geology-Chemistry, Geology-Botany, Geology-Zoology and Geology-Computer Science in NEP.
  • The department is conducting “KHANIJA” bridge course every year for BMK Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya students since 2008. Also the department is conducting National Level Workshop “GRAHYA” for Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya students and staff.
  • Through GSS College, the department has signed MoU’s with Gogte-Joglekar College, Ratnagiri; BMK Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, Belagavi; SGBIT, Belagavi; Mining Engineers’ Association of India; and National Institute of Hydrology, Belagavi. Under these MoU’s various activities such as seminars/workshops, student visits, invited lectures, collaborative researches etc are being conducted.

Facilities in the Department

  • The department is well equipped for undergraduate Geological Study (B.Sc.). with separate Geo-chemistry and Petrology laboratories. The Classrooms are equipped with ICT facility.
  • The department has one of its kind Geology museum named after Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Geology Museum, Which has over 2000 specimen of mineral, rocks and fossils etc., sufficing the need of undergraduate teaching and learning. Most of the samples in the museum are collected by the students and staff themselves during their Geological study tour to various parts of the country.
  • The department also has developed the sedimentological laboratory where in, basic facilities like Sieve analysis, Computing facilities, surveying etc. is available, which is necessary for the general beach morphological and sedimentological research. It has added Remote Sensing Component also in the laboratory with ERDAS Imagine Software and GPS facility.
  • The department is conducting online outreach programmes in remote sensing, GIS and Global Navigation Satellite System, provided by Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun
