  * TATYA alias DR. Y. K. PRABHU AJGAONKAR Memorial Lecture

Dr. Yashwant Keshav Prabhu popularly known as ‘TATYA’ among the family members and friends was born on 2nd July 1911 in a small village Tendoli near Sawantwadi. Soon he shifted to Belgaum along with his father Keshav Ramachandra Prabhu who was a prominent businessman of Belgaum. He had his primary and secondary education in the government Sardar’s school, Belgaum and graduated in 1934 from Karnatak Science College, Dharwad which was then affiliated to Mumbai University. Then he went to Gottingham, Germany to pursue research in Physics and was awarded Ph. D in 1937. After returning to India he worked as a teaching assistant in the Tata Institute, Bangalore now called I.I.Sc. Later, in 1941 he resigned from this post and returned to Belgaum to shoulder the responsibility of his family business. But his love for education and the zeal to contribute his might to the field of education did not diminish a bit. This brought him close to a group of dedicated people who dreamt of making Belgaum an educational hub. The result of their collective effort was the shifting of RPD college of Arts and Science from Sawantwadi to this campus in Belgaum under the banner of South Konkan Education Society in 1948. He continued to serve this institution not only as a member of the management but also taught German language and Physics for some time. Subsequently, he went on to become the President of SKE Society. He personally helped plenty of poor students to complete their education and it is this campus that has nourished several thousands of students into worthy citizens of India and abroad. The man was so simple that a Bicycle was his mode of transport all his life and it appears that the phrase ‘Simple living and high thinking’ was coined after him. He breathed his last on 16th Sept 2009 at the ripe age of 98. The legacy of the man was such that Shri Kiran Thakur, a journalist and the editor of Tarun Bharat, and the present Vice-Chairman of SKE society immediately came forward to institute a series of lectures in his memory fully sponsored by Tarun Bharat Trust. On this occasion every year, it is our bounden duty to rededicate ourselves to the cause of education in whatever the capacity, may be as a teacher, as a member of the management or even a general public with the common goal of ‘Empowering the individual with knowledge’. Possibly this is the best way to express our gratitude to that great soul which strived for the betterment of the society through ‘value education’ all through his life..

As a part of this series, this year the lecture was organized on 13th September 2013. On this occasion, the chief guest, Shri Suresh Prabhu, former Union Cabinet Minister delivered the memorial lecture on the contemporary topic ‘FALLING RUPEE AND ESTEEM: WHERE ARE WE HEADING?’ Shri Sudhir Shanbhag, the Chairman of G. S. Science College Managing Committee presided over the function. Principal Shri S. Y. Prabhu welcomed the gathering and Dr. Nagaraja D. Hegde, co-ordinator of the programme, briefed the audience about the life and contributions of Dr. Y. K. Prabhu to the field of education.
